Flying Start is a Welsh Assembly Government Initiative aimed at making a difference to the life chances of children under 4 years old. Within RCT the aim is to achieve this within a number of different ways, offering FREE high quality childcare is just one element to the menu of services on offer.
The following points highlight what is on offer from Flying Start:
- Quality part-time FREE childcare places for children aged 2-3 years old
- Increased Health visitor support
- Opportunities to access Parent Support
- Workforce development opportunities in the childcare field
- Opportunities for parents to gain an understanding of how important they are to their child’s education through the LAP NAP project.

The Flying Start Programme is only available to families who live within the identified Flying Start areas. (Specific identified postcodes are strictly adhered to.)
Twinkle Toes Day Nursery has been appointed to manage the Flying Start settings based in Maerdy, Tylorstown and Penrhys.
The settings in Maerdy Community Centre and Tylorstown Primary School will be up and running by February 2008 and Penrhys will be later in the year due to lack of a suitable building to house the childcare.
The childcare on offer operates as followed:
- 2 and a half hours a day
- 5 days a week
- 42 weeks of the year.
Twinkle Toes Day Nursery guarantees to provide high quality childcare at all times and these following points illustrate how we operate to ensure our promises are met:
- Qualified and caring practitioners
- All of our settings are registered the CSSIW
- We have regular input from the Flying Start advisor teacher
- We work in partnership with parents/ carers as they are the main educators of the child
- Our setting will have regular Health Visitor input
- The environment is of a very high standard to guarantee productive learning whilst maintaining high level of safety
- Children have access to a range of experiences, drawing upon both the indoor and outdoor learning environments
- Care and Education go hand in hand
- Children’s transitions from Flying Start childcare setting to school are co-coordinated.
